Urban Archaeology Corps - Photography,

I took photos and designed assets for the Urban Archaeology Corps, a partnership between non-profit Groundwork RVA and the National Park Service that empowered Richmond youth to be archaeologists and learn about history and community in the Richmond area. I felt it was important to be an active participant in the projects to best represent them through photography and design. Among several projects the students participated in, the main and culminating project was excavating, learning, and listening to the community at Gravel Hill, where a free African American community lived during the time of the Civil War. A crucial community member, Bill, had roots and connection with the site, and he and his family were a core part of adding context to the hands-on work of excavation. The students did listening sessions with Bill and his family, and we genuinely became a community through this project that honored Bill's family that came before.
